How the Hotel Tipping Calculator works

Enter the details of your stay and the tool builds each tip line, then adds them into a single trip total.

• Nights drives the housekeeping line: nights times $4 times the tier multiplier.
• Bags at check-in and check-out feed the bellhop line. The combined bag count is multiplied by $2 per bag, or $4.50 with the heavy luggage toggle on, then by the tier multiplier.
• Valet retrievals count car pickups, not drop-offs. Each retrieval is worth $5 at the standard tier.
• Room service orders times the average subtotal times 18 percent gives the room service tip. If gratuity is already on the bill, this line stays at $0.
• Concierge requests are tipped at $10 each, scaled by the tier multiplier.
• Service tier applies one multiplier across every role: 0.75 for budget, 1.0 for standard, and 1.75 for luxury.

The grand total is the sum of all five lines. The average per night divides that total by your number of nights, and shows a dash when nights is zero so there is no divide-by-zero error.

Role-by-role tipping etiquette

Housekeeping

Tip daily rather than once at checkout, since staff often rotate and the person working your final day may not be the one who cleaned earlier. Leave cash on the desk or nightstand with a short note so it reads clearly as a tip.

Bellhop and porter

Hand the tip directly to the bellhop when your bags reach the room or the curb. Tip on both ends of the trip if a porter helps at check-in and again at check-out. A common slip is forgetting the check-out handoff.

Valet

The tip goes to the attendant who brings your car back, not the one who parks it. Keep small bills handy so you are not caught short at pickup. You do not need to tip again at drop-off.

Concierge

Tip after a request is fulfilled, not in advance, and scale the amount to the effort. A printed boarding pass is a $5 to $10 favor, while a hard-to-get reservation is closer to $10 to $20. Basic directions need no tip.

Room service

Read the itemized charges before adding anything. A delivery fee is not a tip, but many hotels auto-add a 15 to 20 percent gratuity on top of it. If the gratuity line is already there, you are covered.
